The Myth of the "7-Year Rule" & The UC San Diego Epigenetic Formula
For decades, the standard method for calculating dog age in human years was simply multiplying by seven. Modern veterinary science, led by researchers at the University of California San Diego, has since retired that rule. Dogs age at a non-linear rate, maturing rapidly in their first two years and then slowing down. Because the formula is logarithmic, a 1-year-old dog maps to roughly 31 human years, a 2-year-old to roughly 42 human years, and a 5-year-old to about 57 human years—capturing the rapid early development that the seven-year rule misses entirely.
Why Size & Breed Change the Answer So Much
Size is the strongest single predictor of canine lifespan. Across species, larger animals usually live longer; within dogs, the reverse holds. A Great Dane is often considered geriatric by age 7, while a Chihuahua of the same age is barely middle-aged. Rapid early growth in large breeds carries a cost—faster cell division and higher lifetime cellular wear.
